WHAT IT IS

What Is Rough Cleaning?

Rough cleaning (also called rough clean, initial clean, or pre-punch clean) removes the bulk of construction debris, dust, and residue so the space is walkable and inspectable.

It is not the white-glove final clean. Final cleaning comes after punch items are corrected and the building is ready for turnover or occupancy.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Is Rough Cleaning Done Before Punch?

Dust, film, stickers, and debris can hide defects. A proper rough clean lets the GC, superintendent, and design team see floors, walls, millwork, fixtures, and glass clearly enough to mark punch items.

Cleaning after punch would mean re-cleaning areas that get reworked.

01

Better Visibility

Clear dust, debris, and residue so completed work can be properly inspected.

02

Easier Punch Walks

Give the GC, superintendent, and design team a cleaner view of the finished work.

03

Less Rework

Clean before punch so areas don’t have to be cleaned again after trade corrections.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

What Rough Cleaning Is Not

Rough cleaning is the first step in the process, but it’s not the final step. Here are a few things it does not include.

Not Final Cleaning

Rough cleaning does not include white-glove polish or a move-in-ready standard.

Not Exterior Final Cleaning

Exterior final pressure washing or landscape detail is not included unless specifically scoped.

ROUGH VS. FINAL

Rough Cleaning vs. Final Cleaning

Both are important. Here’s how they differ:

Rough Cleaning

BEFORE PUNCH WALK

Removes construction debris

Clears out trash, packaging, and residue from the site.

Makes work inspectable

Lets the GC, superintendent, and design team see the finished work clearly.

Broom-clean to lightly detailed

Leaves the space clean, walkable, and ready for punch.

Focuses on bulk cleaning

Targets dust, dirt, and construction-related mess (does not include white-glove polish).

Final Cleaning

AFTER PUNCH CORRECTIONS

Prepares for turnover

Creates a move-in ready space for the owner or occupant.

Includes detailed cleaning

Focuses on a high standard, including white-glove polish and detail work.

Cleans after trade corrections

Addresses areas that were reworked after punch items.

Covers all surfaces

Deep cleans floors, glass, fixtures, cabinets, restrooms, and more.
